A little slow getting started but I sure cheered for Ramona in the end. My 7 year old is hooked!

Ramona Quimby is one of literature's finest young protagonists, flawed yet lovable and filled to the brim with spunk and vigor. Cleary does such a wonderful job capturing the tender mind of a first grader: more grown up than a kindergartner while at the same time desperately craving love and attention from adults. It's been a very long time since I first read this book as a child, and I remembered little besides the final chapter covering Ramona's dealings with the neighborhood dog and slipper construction going in, but much of it came flooding back to me as I read and I was charmed all over again. The chapters describing events when Ramona was on the verge of getting into trouble really appealed to my son and fully piqued his interest!

Ok, read. Same charming characters, Ramona is still a brat.
Another publishing gap. Last book 1968, this one 1975.

Now in 1st grade Ramona faces some big challenges: a room to herself herself, a neighborhood dog, and a not as understanding as Miss Binney teacher. Once again Beverly Cleary captures the voice, while Stockard Channing perfectly speaks it, of a 1st grader. All the stories are linked by Ramona's fear that she might not be as brave as she thought, and feature the humorous ways she goes about solving her problems.

this was the first chapter book i was given as a child and i still have the first few pages memorized. i love how accurately cleary captures the feeling of dread ramona has after smushing susan's owl, and how frustrating to be laughed at by adults when she tries to say a "bad word."

As a kid, I sometimes felt like I was reading my own autobiography when I devoured the Ramona books.
