I read Middlegame earlier this year and was really excited to pick up another book by Seanan McGuire! My main complaint about this book was that I felt it was much too short for the complex, multi-faceted world that McGuire tried to flesh out. I enjoyed reading it and it was a super fast read for me - only a couple hours with breaks - but I just wish I could have gotten more world-building and background. I loved the ideas she presents, though, from all the different types of witches to the many rules of the ghost world. This was a fun one and I'm definitely interested in reading even more from her!

Fantastic story. It reminded me of a Neil Gaiman tale. Beautifully written.

I’m always amazed at how cleverly McGuire crafts her books - nothing overly drawn out, no intense pages on pages of strict world building, just exquisitely written characters and perfectly captured tension.

Seanan McGuire's ghost stories are among the best, always infused with a sort of pathos, making her ghosts much more than see-through people. They have a place in the world, a mission, a way of life. It feels a lot like ghost folklore, which is possibly why I like it so much.

As always, McGuire is a master of worldbuilding. The setting is a combination of urban fantasy and urban legend, although Dusk or Dawn feels less like a retelling of urban legends than Sparrow Hill Road (it still gets a touch of that, if only a light one). The concept of ghosts giving lifetime back to the living (or taking it) is very mythic and the storytelling uses were pretty much perfect. The witches were fascinating, I'd happily read a book showing more of their world.

In general, it is a great Seanan McGuire book. There are spooks and witches and corn, there is poetry and gorgeous images, there is that sense of how much more than humanity exists, which permeates every novel she writes. It's great, you should read it.
