Excellent ghost story. Jenna's guilt over her sister's death many years ago has her working as a ghostly operator on a suicide hotline after her death. Then all the ghosts in New York disappear, so Jenna must figure out what's happening. She joins forces with a corn witch, and they follow the problem to Jenna's home town.

Beautiful, suspenseful and with a satisfying ending.

One of my favorite things about Seanan's books is her worldbuilding. The way she seamlessly fits the extraordinary with the mundane. This tale is no different. Reading it (well, listening to it, in my case), it's the most natural thing that ghosts exist the way they do, that witches work how they do.

This is my favorite thing I've read of Seanan McGuire's. And I already really liked her books! I love her prose in this story and I love the world building. It was a quick, beautiful read.

This wasn't bad, but it wasn't my favorite. I think my main issue was that, as a novella, it was just too short. The plot went by so fast, and I was fascinated by the world building with the ghosts and witches and time and how all that worked, but I wanted more time to delve into all that and flesh it out. I just never really got invested in the plot of the ghosts being stolen so I never felt emotionally connected to the story. I liked Jenna and Brenda and Delia and Delia's parrot and all that, and the last few paragraphs with Patty were so great, but I guess I just wanted this to be a fleshed out novel where I'd get more of the world and magic system and have time to get invested in the characters. But this is still a Seanan McGuire story, and I always enjoy her writing on some level, so it's not like reading this wasn't enjoyable. I just think I could've liked it even more if it had been longer.

An ethereal, quiet, sad read that I couldn't put down. This character was beautiful and haunting and made me really think about ghost lore. Honestly a really wonderful read.

Fascinating world building and characters (mostly) doing their best. It's a recipe for ginny! success.

Short novel; the story itself is a little disappointing, but the concept is fascinating and I almost always enjoy Seanan's writing.
