3.5 Stars! I will say that I did not start with the first book in the series, so I admit I am probably missing a lot of background. That being said, I was able to understand the characters and it can most definitely be read as a stand alone book. I fully enjoyed the book and plot. I haven't read Jo Nesbo before, and I feel I have missed out on some unique and great writing.
The descriptions and atmosphere created in this book are chilling! The characters... the suspense... the climax!!! I enjoyed the twists and turns and Hitchock-esque plot and story. For those who are looking for a suspenseful read, this may be it! I have put some of his other books on my to-read list... and am very much looking forward to them!

Det här är en helt okej kriminalroman. Den är spännande, lagom underhållande och läsvärd. Det är inte mer "litteratur" än vad Camilla Läckberg är.
Kvinnor med barn försvinner i Norge, några av dom spårlöst. Kommissarie Harry Hole får brev från någon som kallar sig "snömannen" och tror snabbt han har en seriemördare på halsen. Speciellt eftersom det står snögubbar och ser upp på husen där de försvunna kvinnorna bott. I typisk Nesbø stil blir man presenterad för den ena "mördaren" efter den andra, som alla visar sig vara oskyldiga, innan den riktiga blir presenterad i sitt rätta jag. Jo, jag hade en misstanke om vem det var, men ingenting bestämt. Ingen av de som i tur och ordning antogs eller påstods vara snömannen köpte jag. Till slut blev det tjatigt.
"Snömannen" är en bra "whodunnit", men inte världsklass. Boken är fattig på livsinsikt och djup - fast det är ju inte något man bör söka efter i en thriller. Det hade bara varit bonus.

Started well, but but two thirds of the way through I got bored with the whole thing, and I get the feeling Jo Nesbo did too. Like many books of this genre, it appears to have been written with a view to getting a film deal.
This book was just as good as the reviews said. But im still confused about the mold man!

Omul de zăpadă este povestea după care oamenii de zăpadă nu au mai fost la fel. Nu pentru mine. Dacă țin bine minte, Omul de zăpadă a fost primul meu contact cu stăpânirea de sine și ascuțimea lui Jo Nesbo. În stilu-mi caracteristic, fără informații complete, am împrumutat acum câțiva ani acest volum de la bibliotecă. Descrierea îmi păruse super interesantă și m-am lăsat imediat aruncată în mijlocul străzilor pline de zăpadă și cruzime.

Apoi, la fel de neinformată, am ales și alte cărți scrise de el, fără să caut detalii despre universul Nesbo, despre cât de ample sunt poveștile sale, despre cine este Harry Hole și care sunt căile de acces în lumea sa plină de tenebre, crime și indicii. M-am luminat într-un final, atunci când mi-a fost clar că există niște goluri, niște sincope în viața lui Hole. Voiam să știu mai multe despre el, simțeam că mă aflu pe un teren care amenință să o ia la vale, prinsă între bucățile desprinse și găurile pe care nu știam cum să le umplu. Și atunci am aflat că am de-a face cu o serie (nu mă judecați, nu alocam atâta atenție platformei Goodreads, nu căutam unde trebuia).
Vestea că Editura Trei a preluat în portofoliul său această serie a fost asigurarea mea pentru universul Nesbo-Hole. Am știut că voi face parte din echipa lor, că voi răsturna străzile în căutarea infractorilor, că nimic nu va fi ușor în aceste anchete, că fiecare dosar deschis va fi sinonim cu o falie dureroasă deschisă în rândul celor implicați. Pentru că Nesbo face și asta: șochează atunci când amestecă personajele secundare, corupția, vanitatea, egoul masculin, poveștile de dragoste, micile drame personale. Nu lasă niciun front neexploatat, nu evită dezastrele naturale și nici consecințele. Le reunește pe toate în povești complexe, care poartă cititorii pe axa timpului, în mijlocul hăului inițiat de oameni, alimentat cu moarte, cruzime și lacrimi.

This was a category for a reading challenge, otherwise I don't think I would have read it. The protagonist (named a cringe-worthy 'Harry Hole') is an emotionally unstable alcoholic who is obsessed with serial killers and with describing snow as it glistens. He's not so much into detecting as he is flailing and stumbling on to coincidences that other people pointed out. Or, obsessing over his ex. He does that quite a lot. The book was dark and gloomy, there wasn't much mystery there (you can guess who the killer is about halfway, but you stick to the end to find out how they did it).
I have determined that Nordic Noir is not my jam. But if you are into dark, grisly murders with sex and gore mixed in, give this a spin. I personally, will never listen to 'Do You Want to Build a Snowman?' the same way again.
