The only thing I really enjoyed was the meeting between the author and his fictionalized self. That was sort of fun.
Other than that, I didn't really enjoy it. My friend, who likes horror, suggested I borrow it. So I did, and I read it. And goodness, am I tired of reading about men who menace their surroundings all while feeling sorry for themselves! I suppose it reminded me of reading tBoSaS because that novel also has a frustratingly cruel narrator. Honestly, I might prefer Coryo to Yozo Oba though...
Remember to check trigger warnings! I was warned beforehand which was fortunate. I've tried to tag the worst stuff but I bet my list is incomplete.

DNF for the time being, i just wasn't invested in the story enough to keep going
omfg such a good book minus a lil misogyny but the ending wtf
Whilst I haven't read the original novel that this is based on, there is no doubt in my mind that it can only be an extremely worthy and respectful adaptation. The story of Yozo Oba is an autobiographical novel written by Dazai a month before his suicide, and it is truly an incredible story. From Oba's humble beginnings, getting through a life of hatred of humans by taking on the role of a clown, we see the building blocks that gradually - so, so gradually - create a man who seems only able to leave a trail of destruction wherever he goes, haunted by more and more ghosts as his life goes on, his mistakes becoming less excusable in time.
The growth of this character is captured impeccably, and the damage he does to the innocents drawn to him make him so hard to sympathize with as he becomes increasingly selfish - at some points, jaw-droppingly so ( it's all incredibly harrowing). And yet... against all my will, all through this work I so wanted him to have a revelation and mend his ways.
The artwork is fantastic, it doesn't spare the darker points for the reader's imagination. From it never ceases to startle. It's not just a series of shocks, however - the artist seems to know when to slow down the pace, to give the reader a chance to breathe and process. Reading this isn't an experience I'll soon forget.
I can't wait to read the original text having read this, I'm eager to relive this story from a new perspective. It's shocking, poignant, infuriating, heartbreaking... and it always gives you time to feel everything. Somehow, I feel like I've experienced this life story across many years, when in fact it was just a few days. One of the greatest things I've ever read.

Nothing quite like it. Powerful. The grime and guts involved in this artistic master piece. The honesty. The ending. A treasure this is.
