I read the book pretty quickly. I did find eight to ten poems that I dog-eared the page for, but so much of this felt like the leftovers that had no place else to go. His frivolous stuff, maybe? Maybe they felt there needed to be a final resting place for some of his work, leaving nothing unpublished? Just felt like an odd assortment. Like another review said, the Foreword by his son was the best part of the book.

Such a great collection. I recommend listening to the audiobook first, as I think that some of these poems are meant to be heard rather than read, and then going back and reading the book more closely.

leonard cohen!!! <3

this collection is so wonderful and interesting. like with any collection (whether that be poetry, short stories, essays, etc.) this book has hits & misses. overall, though, it was amazing. cohen’s mind was GENIUS & MASSIVE! so many great great great pieces in here. i’ll miss him forever :,(

here’s some fave excerpts:

“because there was never anything better
I did in the human world
than to lie down in the fields of frankincense
with you”

-

“You took my ring
and threw it in the garbage
I’ve been looking thru
the garbage ever since
if you find yourself
beside the city dump sometime
you’ll find it covered
with my fingerprints”

-

“I see you in windows
that open so wide
there’s nothing beyond them,
and nothing inside.

You take off your sandals
you shake out your hair,
your beauty dismantled
and worn everywhere.

The story’s been written.
The letter’s been sealed.
You gave me a lily,
but now it’s a field.”
- Full Employment

I loved this book like nothing else. I carried it with my everywhere for weeks after finishing it, I even wrote notes in the book (a sin by my standards) but I did it because I loved this work so much. I read it at work, I read it before sleeping and I read it over and over.

As always Leonard Cohen has a type of poetic music that is in all of his words. Not a word seems out of place or wasted. Each page flows into the next with such ease. Shout out to that 1990 Christian Slater film for introducing me to Cohen when I was 14.
