I want to give this 5 stars just to offset the bad reviews. I genuinely believe all the negative reviews are because people can’t bring themselves to accept that hot girls can also be smart and introspective.

This is not a book about feminism. This is a book about Em Rata’s experience in her own body that just so happens to touch on some aspects of feminism, because she is, well, female. She is a wealthy, popular white woman, so her actual experiences are never relatable (who gets a headache while on an all-expense paid trip to Maldives? Certainly not anyone within my tax bracket), but her thoughts and feelings are. Great, enjoyable read, but I would’ve done away with the blind items.

I enjoyed learning more about someone as intriguing and beautiful as Emily. Hearing about what really goes on as a model and the kind of struggles she faced was eye opening. Yes she's perfect but also I felt for her, especially after reading about Blurred Lines and the ways that men are insufferable.

I appreciate why she wrote it and there were some essays that will stick with me and it's interesting to see how her experiences have shaped her and changed her view on the world. I do think however that this was written too soon. I think with a bit more distance she may have more to say because I think she's still discovering her own thoughts on feminism and the modelling industry. I would have liked some further self-reflection on her place in the modelling industry or how the industry is affecting other women. Even though she mentions empowerment in making her own way in the industry and using her body to do so - I would have liked some self-reflection on the harm this could be having to young girls. Also, it would have been interesting to explore female friendships. A lot of this was about the male gaze and its effects in her life but it would have been interesting to see whether this has affected her female friendships. It does feel like in parts she makes quite negative comments about other women e.g., one of the models at an event she goes to, so it would have been interesting to see her reflect on this.
