i've never closely followed emily ratajkowski but wow did she so perfectly describe how it feels to be a woman looking for power in a world controlled by men
Such an amazing insight. I had a lot of preconceptions about Emily Ratajkowski which I’m now recognising as internalised misogyny because every single one of them were wrong.
I found her relationship with her mother especially interesting and I think very significant for a lot of millennial women raised by mothers who were victims of horrific 90s beauty standards.
I listened to the audiobook, as I tend to do with books like this as hearing the author speak it makes it especially powerful. I found her to be such a compelling narrator and I was completely heartbroken her when she seemed to start crying at the end of one of the essays.

Hearing tears being choked back as the author ends the chapter about the illegal production of books with her image is truly a noteworthy moment in my literature journey. There is nothing else I can say about that book that would be more of a resounding endorsement of it, in my opinion. If you still don’t want to read (or in my case, listen to) it, reflect on if you have some internalized misogyny that you need to get over!!
This is a thoughtful series of essays focusing on a theme or event in Emily Ratajkowski's life, taking an in-depth look at self-image, celebrity culture, the idea of beauty and body image as well as acting as a social commentary on men, power and class.
Emily has an interesting perspective on the Hollywood machine and shares her lived experiences through some of what the public will recognise her best for - the blurred lines video, her NY times essay, her role in Gone Girl, etc.
Some of her essays are strikingly moving - the complexity of dealing with an abuser's passing, her mother's idealisation of an impossible standard of beauty and the consistent examples of how models / women are treated by powerful men.
I really enjoyed her views and her ability to dissect situations and her self-awareness. At some many times in her life, her image or body has been abused or used without her consent and Emily discusses the complexities of this as ultimately its how she made living, entered motherhood and her experiences of womanhood.
I'd definitely read any future books!
