made me who i am today

Personally, this book is amazing for children. The themes and plot grabs every child's attention. There's mystery, action, adventure and beasts. Although the story is short it's good for children who have started to get into reading or those who want a quick read.

The story follows a young boy called Tom, who has been chosen by the King of Aventia and the good wizard, Aduro, to get rid of the evil spell casted on the six beasts who protect the kingdom but now destroy it (under the influence of the evil spell). The spell was casted by an envy-filled, bad wizard known as Melven.
On his journey he meets Ellena and her friendly wolf, Silver, who join him and save the kingdom from Ferno the fire dragon by freeing him from evil.

This series isn't high literature, but it's entertaining enough that my 8 year old reluctant reader wants to keep going. They're formulaic like the Magic Tree House, but the reading level seems to be a tad higher.

This was a great start to the series. Yes it had a lot of tropes for typical fantasy books such as a normal if not down on his luck character who is destined to be a hero. There is plenty of action for young readers new to the genre. I am reading this series to my youngest son as a bedtime story and he loves it.

Middle of the road adventure story with lots of familiar elements and some huge logic leaps. Not only did our 5-year son old predict the ending but asked for us to skip the aftermath in order to start on the next adventure in the series. He likes the build up but not what he calls the "blah-blah-blah."

It is a challenge to find books that appeal to boys in this age group so we are happy that BQ fits the bill.
