Really sweet story about a dad and his daughter and their hair love.
Beautiful and necessary message. Made me tear up a little towards the end!
This picturebook is based on an award-winning short animation. The story is a little different here, but I think they made the right decision to edit the B-plot* for this much younger target audience, so there is more focus on the positive hair message and less focus on the potential death of a parent.
*(In the animation, Mom is in the hospital and has no hair because of chemo. Here, she wears a headscarf so we don't know what her hair looks like, and the 'special day' is her homecoming. It's a small shift, it still tells the same story, but the ending is a little more uplifting because you already know she got better.
Mom's story is still present, but in a more subtle way (in the form of background greeting cards). I'm glad they didn't cut it entirely!)

The film was excellent. The book has some page-turn issues and also diminishes the emotional impact a lot (vs the film). Still a sweet story, I guess. And wonderful illustrations.
I love this one. The daddy/daughter relationship is awesome, and I'm so envious of that seriously fabulous hair. It's a lovely read for anyone, and now I'm off to see the animation and share it with a wonderful little girl and her parents (who's probably already seen it, but I better make sure!)
A beautifully illustrated story about a father and daughter (Zuri), working to find (and arrange) the perfect hairstyle for a very special person. Perhaps the mother was returning from a stay at a hospital or perhaps she returned from vacation. Regardless, Zuri and her father spend time together creating the perfect "do" for their loved one's return. Lots of great talking points for children, especially those that might be dealing with a parent that is sick or away on a trip.
Such a beautiful story and family! The illustrations are great and radiate love.
