My favorite one of the series yet - a flawless legal thriller

Really want Cisco to have his own spin off (he's so much more believable of a character in the books than the TV show)

Perfectly serviceable legal thriller. Gets a big heavy-handed in places.

Did the early Bosch books have much more thematic subtlety, or is that just a trick of my memory?

In any case, no subtlety here, but a solid effort. if you like this sort of thing you'll like this particular thing.

I'm sort of impressed at how the author is able to make me a reader who is rooting for the main character, even though...the main character (Mickey Haller) is a defense attorney.

I know that we need them, or at least have them...when falsely accused of something, but they are group of people that work in the fringe area of what is acceptable. They do need to prove their client's innocence, but are able to obfuscate ENOUGH, so that the prosecution is unable to make the burden of proof (which is far from proving they didn't do it...whatever it is).

I've never needed a lawyer in this way, but I'm glad that we live in a country that allows for a defense, instead of having to prove your innocence.

In this book, the main character is a defense lawyer (established above, with also my negative connotatio  of that profession). The goal of this story is to find that the client of Mickey Haller isn't the one that killed the prostitute that he was pimping.

SO, with that in mind, we are not dealing with the type of people that I hang around with, nor actually know.

I was skeptical that Mickey could/would be able to get his client off, nor from the beginning, did I believe he didn't do it.

By the end of the book, I was crying. Yes, it his that emotionally for me. This author was able to crossover and make this story matter to me. I'm SO impressed by the way that he roped me in, and delivered such a powerful story.

The angle of being a father, and being separated from his child, and having lost his child's confidence and respect, too...hit hard.

This a wonderfully complicated story, but by the end...I got it, and so glad that I read it. Also the title of the book...now makes so much sense. Well done, indeed.

I am not a big fan of legal thrillers. Michael Connelly is a great author, and I enjoyed this book. I love the character of Mickey Haller.

[b:The Gods of Guilt|17333227|The Gods of Guilt (Mickey Haller, #5; Harry Bosch Universe, #25)|Michael Connelly|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1362529630l/17333227._SY75_.jpg|23863053]. I like that Michael Connelly is doing the same with Mickey Haller as he did with Bosch - kept them aging. Another good one.

I wanted to give this five stars, but I had issues with Mickey's behavior. Several of the characters called him an a-hole and they're spot-on. He could have done what he needed to without treating people the way he did in this book.

I am a fan of the Mickey Haller books, since I like a good thriller/mystery/courtroom drama.
This one was enjoyable, not mindblowing, but still pretty good.
