Note: The author sent me a copy in return for an honest review.
The Markings follows a 16 year-old girl named Adaline through her journey to escape Dather and King Renon. Adaline escapes with the help of a boy named Alexander and continues gain help and friendships from others along the way. It's filled with plot twists, magic, friendship, loss, and even a tiny bit of love.

This book reminded me a lot of Shatter Me mixed with Red Queen! It is a fun book that is an entryway into YA Fantasy and Dystopian. Also, this book has a map and a page where the gifts are explained!

The beginning started with action right off of the bat, which is always exciting, although I would have liked a bit more development. The main character is hit with trauma right off the bat, and boy do I love a tortured MC.

I think the story did a good job of keeping the characters in the story acting their age, which is really refreshing. Although I enjoyed how the characters were true to their age, I would have liked the dialogue to be spruced up a bit. Sometimes it didn’t really grab my attention.

Overall, The Markings is a fun book for younger readers looking to get immersed in the YA genre. It has lots of fun twists and relatable characters!

I was very hesitant at first to read this book, considering I do not typically like anything with dystopian vibes or in the genre. I did, however, really enjoy reading this book. Although, I am sure that this book is more fantasy than dystopian it still gave me the dystopian vibes.

THIS DOES INCLUDE SOME SPOILERS!!!

This story is set in dystopian Hawaii where the gifted are arrested and killed for their abilities. It follows the story of Adaline a sixteen-year-old girl. Who is stuck in the prison with her brother and mother. She is one of the gifted and so is her mother who reveals it to her before, she is taken to get executed for Parting Day. Adaline and her brother escape their cell once she learns how to semi-control her ability. Though she escaped with her brother, he did not make it out of the castle alive.

She makes it out of the castle, where a guard helps hide her. She then realizes that the guard is her childhood best friend Alexander. She questions why he helped her and he reveals his father told him to help her before he left. They continue to travel to get away from the King's best men. They run into Adaline's friend Zavy and her younger brother. Who have been hiding in the wilderness since their mother was taken to the prison. They catch and together begin hiding from the King's men.

They get captured and Adaline uses her abilities to escape and goes to rescue Alexander. She rescues Alexander and shortly after run into her older brother. She does not remember him because her mom replaced her memory with memories of Alexander, and Alexander's mother did the same thing. Once they retrieve their memories back they are not the same.

Her older brother tells them about a prophecy that they both are in. They are getting taken to a different island to help with the rebellion.

I would add more but I do not want to spoil everything in the book. The book kept me intrigued during the entire time I read it. I instantly fell in love with the writing style and the magic system of the book.

If you love fantasy books with dystopian vibes and with complex magic systems this book is for you. If you enjoyed the Shatter Me series you need to put this book on your TBR list immediately.

If you like Shatter Me, you'll like The Markings. This was paced very well with lots of twists to keep the reader engaged. The narrator, Adaline, character growth throughout this book is well done.

Adaline is a constant compass for compassionate actions.

The Markings is a good read and a great debut novel!

Final rating: 64/100 (good) give it a try, I enjoyed it.

Adaline, a force lifter, escapes from prison with the help of one of the guards, her childhood friend Alexander. Together they flee into the forest, attempting to reach Libertas—A place for people with gifts.

My favourite character was one of the side characters Zavy. I just liked her personality and thought she was one of the more distinct/well-written characters. The love interest didn't impress me that much (love interests usually don't for me, so take that with a grain of salt) but I liked all the other characters well enough, I wish we got to know them a little better before the end. Hopefully, we'll get to know everyone more in the next book. Although we did get to know them well enough that I teared up when ~~events occurred.~~

I also think the powers are cool and different from the usual earth, water, air, fire we usually get in fantasy.

My only real complaint with this book is that everything seems super convenient, but since they have people who can see the future controlling everything it does make sense in-universe.
