Thank god I did the audiobook cause this was bad, two stars for the interesting concept but it was the most boring, pretentious shit I’ve ever read
medium-paced
Interesting read. Best version of The Breakfast Club ever. Looking forward to Doomed.
I read this for a book discussion group, and though I was not wildly interested in reading it, I was somewhat intrigued. In fact, I would say that it is better than I expected. Much of the book is really gross, Palahniuk's means, I suppose, of rendering hell so that it is hellish, but I could have done without a lot of the graphic description; nevertheless, he has created a fairly interesting modern quest story which is at the same time a really obvious satire on Judy Blume's Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret. I read Blume when it first came out (I was 10), and although I don't remember much about the book, I do remember I thought it was pretty stupid. (I am in the minority on this, obviously, since it has been in print ever since, beloved by little girls everywhere.) I do not care enough to go back and review Blume's book, but I bet someone really familiar with it would see a lot more satire than I did--I think, in other words, that the satire is expansive and detailed. As a story in itself, and what made the book interesting to me, is the fact that way at the end Palahniuk raises a very intriguing question about the nature of reality and the meaning of life--or after life. I would imagine he is an atheist, as the perspective here seems to be that much of what we experience is the product of the stories we tell ourselves about what is real. Leaves you with some food for thought--if you can stomach the rather puerile grossness.

People have such opinions of Chuck Palahniuk's writing. I don't think I've been this annoyed at reading reviews for a long time.
It's interesting how many GR reviewers address him directly, as in: "It seems that over the course of several books you’ve given completely in to trivial cliché and one-shot pop fad....You are better than this. Where is the insightful chaos? Where is the wink and the whisper? Where is the intensity, the fire, the flare? Where is your humor?"
These are such self-important reviews, as if the reviewer is THE expert on C.P. and/or is his Mom and/or knows him personally. Whatever. Get over yourselves.
I don't like all of his books equally, but that might have something to do with what appeals to me, rather than any failing on the part of the writer. I don't think there is any denying that C.P. is a brilliant author, and I think his repertoire is broad enough for most anyone to enjoy one or two, if not all, of his works.
At any rate, this is my favorite so far. I didn't think it was clichéd. It was incredibly funny and highly quotable.
I refer you to the review by Brandon Tietz, whose view is opposite those whiners who think "their" Chuck has lost it: "For those of you who begged and pleaded to see the writing return to its former style and glory as seen in Fight Club, Survivor, and Choke—you’ll be quite pleased with the speed-laced prose that is Damned."

Can't wait to get the sequel.
