2.5, to be fair.
While I appreciate that this book featured main characters in their 40s, the story itself fell flat for me. Our main couple come together too quickly for me to really believe in their romance. I say that about a lot of stories (I just really love a slow burn), but this is the worst offender I've read in a while. Our main couple is practically saying "I love you" after only FOUR days.
I never felt like I got to know either of them. They both felt like stock contemporary romance characters. Her: Competent but emotionally risk-averse. Loves coffee, shoes and her besties. Him: Protective of those he cares about. A gentleman in the streets and a freak in the sheets. Has his boys looking out for him. Both: Dealing with the impact of a big, emotional trauma and trying not to let it disrupt their relationship.
Along with the romance, the main plot involving Vanessa's ex pretty much comes to nothing. Without giving too much away, the big confrontation you expect between Vanessa and her ex didn't deliver the drama or the satisfaction I hoped for.
I did like the friendship between Vanessa, Cree and Janae. The cover is also gorgeous. I would buy it for that alone.

Big thanks to St. Martin's Press and LaQuette for this ARC or Vanessa Jared's Got a Man!

TW: Hints of: Domestic abuse, parental loss, controlling, mental/emotional abuse
Okay, this book was so friggin' sweet, steamy and fun. I also abso-friggin'-lutely love Michael and Vanessa's dynamic. The perfect balance of strength, independence, vulnerability and sass.
"I want nothing less than a strong, independent woman who knows her own mind. Only I want to put all the pieces together and figure out what she wants before I make a move. I want her to know her worth and make me chase her like the queen she knows she is." I AM SORRY BUT WHAT, HELLO MICHAEL. #swoon
This was a pretty quick read for me and I literally jaw-dropped when I read about the steamy scene that was interrupted by some unexpected guests :o The hints of mental/emotional abuse from Vanessa's ex was hard to but it was incredible to see her growth, and even Michael's growth, throughout the book while they learned to overcome their pasts.
"I still had a long way to go in my healing journey. But I knew no matter what, I would never again mistake manipulation and fear as love. And as long as that was true, I could keep myself safe." an incredibly strong quote from an incredibly strong woman! <3
You can pick up your copy on Sept. 20 and I would definitely recommend this book to my friends! While I liked the fast-paced book, I did feel the ending was a bit rushed. Not sloppily rushed, just was kind of hoping for a longer time spent before the epilogue but also hoping and praying we get a series and we can learn more about Cree & Janae!!
Thanks again, LaQuette, it was a good read!

Maybe I shouldn’t have read this right after reading Reel. This book was just okay. I definitely thought the first half was stronger than the last half. I thought Michael and Vanessa were cute but it was not insta lovey because we went from instant attraction to hooking up to being in love all within a span of a week. I wanted more from the buildup and from their connection. It was just BOOM they were in love when they barely knew each other. Their chemistry was very hot though. This book was short and it packed in a lot but the main focus of the romance between Michael and Vanessa felt a little lackluster to me. I also never really cared about any of their characters to a strong degree. As the story went on I got less and less interested. I never found myself fully invested in the story.
DNFed at 45%, just couldn't get into it. I liked that Vanessa was older than a lot of romance book MCs but beyond that no one here really was able to hold my interest.

I was honestly expecting a second chance kind of romance, but what I got was a wonderful enemies to lovers romance featuring characters who really could be your neighbors. Fully developed people you would want to be friends with in real life with the kind of love story you love to hear at weddings.
