Lovely romantic story, if a little rushed at the end.
I have only read one other book by Zafon but it was very similar. There is a past and present plot and the city itself plays a major part in the story. It was still a very well written book but even the addition of fantastical elements didn't make it feel that different.

Also, making the female lead tragic and ill so that she dies at end just felt cheap and unnecessary. It reminds me of older authors where the youthful girlfriend dies so her pure memory can remain unspoiled.
ero indecisa.. tre o quattro? alla fine quattro, non fosse altro perchè german è un pittore infelice che si dovrà sforzare di trovare qualcosa per cui vivere..zafon non si smentisce con questo libro, di certo gli piacciono le statue e gli antri oscuri e le cose inanimate che all'improvviso prendono vita e non sono così tanto amichevoli... da questo libro potrebbero ricavarne un bel film horror (altro che non aprite quella porta... l'ho visto l'altra sera..ha annoiato persino la mia matematica sorella..).

I was drawn to this book before it was translated here. So when it finally was, I was quite excited to begin it. The book didn't disappoint. This is definitely a gothic tale and it was quite a unique experience for me. I really enjoy Carlos Ruiz Zafon's books. The author has a way with imagery that is quite delightful. This book was dark, tragic, and had a hint of romance without it detracting from the overall story. All in all, if you have enjoyed any of the author's other works or enjoy a good gothic story, I recommend this.
