This story had an interesting plot line - young girl travels with 7 companions to try and close the spindles to save the world. The executions of the storyline didn’t flow nicely - the storytelling switch perspective from the “good” team and the “bad” side too often. There was no enough lore and context provided to truly understand the fear of the gates/ the red enemy her uncle is trying to bring to there world. The elders just giving up on protecting this world to go back to there own doesn’t really make sense - like they don’t even want to try and protect the realm when it’s there “duty” seems very odd. On a more positive note the dialogue and interactions between the characters felt natural and was very enjoyable to read. I really like the interactions between the uncle and the queen - even if they are the bad guys I am still rooting for them as a married couple. I do not currently feel motivated to read the next book in this series as the plot seems pretty predictable- I am confident they will fail to close enough spindles and get to the point of battling the evil red eye guy only to close the gate/ defeat him at the last minute. I also feel like the female lead will somehow instinctively know how to use the spindles after and open a path for the elders/ etc to go home.

I so nearly DNF'd this book so many times. It constantly felt like the story was about to pick up, but it just never did in my opinion. It felt like the whole book was just to set up the story for the rest of the series, but the story within this book feels so slow and unexciting, and in the end I don't even think I'm compelled enough to keep reading the rest of the series.

What a slow read. The story dragged on forever. The shifting perspectives didn’t help. The world is interesting but it’s a hard book to get into and even harder to care about any of the characters.
