A light, very quick read with some fun short stories/myths. The overall feeling I had going away from the book was wishing there had been more depth and substance to it. Part of that is probably due to the nature of writing the book being as a collection of 15 separate short myths instead of one longer epic. With mythology where Gaiman is drawing from existing sources and tales its hard to know how much of these limitations are due to those original sources, but I was hoping for a retelling and elevation of norse mythology. Instead, this book read closer to a young adult introduction to the subject. Still an enjoyable read, but the book didnt quite meet my hopes or expectations going in.

Succinct, eloquent and with his trademark wit and good humor, the master of modernizing ancient pantheons and obvious recipient of Odin's gift,Neil Gaiman, whose first ever book purchase was a collection of Norse myths, triumphs again. Neil honour stone source material by staying faithful to it, and respects the oral tradition first utilized before things got destroyed lost and what was left recorded by using a teller's voice. He guides the reader by the hand, many of the previous myths setting the stage and providing us with relevant information for those later on. It is as if we can hear him by a crackling fire describing Thor's experience as a blushing, fiery eyed bride, or mourning the friendship lost between a wolf pup who will destroy the world and the God who lost his hand to that same wolf's bite. Unlike this review, Neil wastes no words yet still paints a vivid picture of each god's and goddess' personality and extracts from the reader excitement, amusement (see if you can spot the little visitor on page 64) and grief as well as hope. We know how it will end, just as we know that it will begin anew.

Pretty easy read. Got a bit bored through some first parts but pushed through.
Would of been much better if the book was longer and provided more character development rather than just throw the characters at us.

A quick read about many of Thor and Loki adventures along with other Norse gods, giants and dwarfs. This is a good book to read one chapter each night.
