Maybe the start of a new series, from the author of the Bosch and Lincoln Lawyer books? This one’s pretty good, another reliable detective story, this one primarily taking place on Catalina Island. As he’s done with Los Angeles, his abiding affection for a place hooks me. The storyline is pretty good, this one a dual-track converging towards the end. I liked the new characters too. Not sure whether the relationship is more weakly rendered, or it was familiarity with the previous ones that made me forgive contrivance. Still - a good one.

I really enjoyed this new Connelly character!  I love the Catalina setting and learning more about that unique part of California. The mystery was good and left plenty of fodder for future books, both in the potential for crime/murder to be solved on the island and in my interest in these characters.

I was excited to dive into a new series from Michael Connelly, but unfortunately, it didn’t hook me right away.

At first, the emphasis on boating technology felt a bit dull and distracting. However, the Catalina setting provided a refreshing backdrop, and I soon warmed up to Stillwell—a sharp, committed cop navigating a sea of complacency and ineptitude. He’s not afraid to bend the rules to get results. Sound familiar?

This series shows promise, and I believe it has room to grow. I’ll definitely give the next installment a chance.
