It is something that any serious literary critic or writer should read. More for a historical perspective and to get a sense of the impact this work had on the culture and the general field of literature. It is very clear, and at time unforgivably, that this is a product of its time. It is a slog of a read as well.

Über dieses Buch und besonders über die Heldenreise wird immer, wenn es um Mythen geht, so viel geredet, dass das schon lange auf meiner Liste stand, aber lange ignoriert wurde, weil ich faul bin.
Ich bin etwas stolz, dass ich das durchgezogen habe.
Nach den, wie gesagt sehr zahlreichen, Erwähnungen habe ich aber ein bisschen etwas anderes erwartet. Besonders die Heldenreise wird sehr oft als eine Art "Schablone" benutzt, um Schreibtipps zu geben oder Mythen zu analysieren - wie kann man dann etwas anderes erwartet als einen strukturalistischen Ritt durch die Geschichten à la Vladimir Propp? Stellt euch meine Überraschung vor, als Campbell mit einer Lobeshymne auf Freud und Jung begann und wären dem ganzen Buch nicht von der Idee wegkam, dass Mythen ja irgendwas mit Träumen und Unterbewusstsein zu tun haben müssen. Das ist auch mein größtes Problem damit: Er kippt hier beinahe in so eine esoterische Idee von einer Art kollektiven Unbewussten und denkt nicht darüber nach, dass sich bestimmt Strukturen vielleicht auch einfach entwickelt haben, weil sie... Naja, einfach spannend zu erzählen und sehr, sehr simpel sind. Trotzdem muss man ihm anrechnen, dass er das nicht die ganze Zeit macht und sehr viel Material verwendet. Immerhin wehrt er sich mit beiden Ellenbogen gegen das Klischee, Mythen wären einfach nur eine "Proto-Wissenschaft" für primitive Menschen, um Welt zu erklären - das wird den komplexen Geschichten wirklich in keiner Weise gerecht! Und die Idee, Mythen rein zeichenhaft zu lesen, ist in dem Kontext auf jeden Fall korrekt.
Am Ende ist das wohl ein Text, der zurecht seine hohen Wellen geschlagen hat und am Ende selbst bescheiden zugibt: "Ein endgültiges System der Mytheninterpretation gibt es nicht und wird es nie geben."
Empfehle ich das? Nur Leuten, die sich schonmal in irgendeiner Form mit dem Thema beschäftigt haben und erkennen, dass das ein Buch mit einigen Problemchen ist.

I understand the appeal and importance of this book, as it does an amazing job of outlining themes and structure of classic myths and the hero’s journey. But there’s a reason I shy away from nonfiction for the most part and this book, while containing a ton of knowledge that is useful in understanding mythology, is very dry. Most of the book was examples of an indeterminate length that Campbell used to prove the few paragraphs of theory that he wrote every chapter. An important book, but not a compelling one.
