The Last Apprentice (or the Spook's Apprentice as it was originally called) tells the story of young Tom Ward, who becomes the apprentice to a Spook. Spooks have the job of protecting people from things like witches and ghosts.

The first book in this series is called Revenge of the Witch and deals with, well. . .witches. What I find rather interesting about this book (and the series as a whole) is that it is written and marketed as a story for middle grade children. The vocabulary and sentence structure is very simple. However, there are some scary moments and the overall story line probably fits better with young adult/high school students. At the end of the day, the series is probably a cousin to Harry Potter.

But, what really matters is: is the book worth your time. The answer is yes. Revenge of the Witch does read like an outline or a 343 page prologue. It feels like a television pilot and reads like one too. And that's okay. It's all set up for a larger and darker story that I cannot wait to get into.

it was ok. i listened to it and the reader's voice was so quiet at times, i could hardly hear it. it is the first in a series and was not good enough to read the next one.

I loved this book so much.

I was looking for a book in my school library that had a high reading score but since the higher it is the more graphic it gets it was hard, this wasn’t what i was looking for but now i have a new favorite series that is the greatest.

THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD!!!! Tom Ward, the seventh son of a seventh son, becomes the apprentice to John Gregory, the local Spook. A spook is essentially a fighter against evil supernatural forces. His job is to keep the townspeople safe from witches, boggarts, and all manors of supernatural evil creatures. It is prophesied that Tom will be the greatest apprentice John Gregory has ever had, and you soon learn why. The first book centers around the plot for revenge of a malevolent witch that John Gregory has been keeping locked away in a dark whole in the ground for years.

I wish they would make these books into a Netflix series or show. I LOVED it!
