Despite being written for a younger audience, the storytelling style employed in this book is very engaging. The plot may be obvious and the protagonist very naive, but the author creates tension and keeps you keen.

The writing was quite simplistic and seemed to be written for a younger audience. The themes were dark and unsettling. These two elements of the writing style and the content seemed to stand in opposition to one another and I didn't enjoy reading The Last Apprentice.

Delaney was creative in his details of trapping witches and boggarts and other supernatural beings. I did like the statement, "Never trust a girl wearing pointy shoes." I also thought it was trite to use ...

Plot: A young boy apprentices to the Spook and learns to defend the County and combat the growing threat from the witches.
Good: interesting plot, good illustrations
Bad: no character depth

I have decided to give this book a shot because it is being adapted into a major film. This was definitely a children's book, but the horror element may be too gory for very young kids. The writing was simple. It had an interesting plot, but the characters were under-developed. The book felt more like a summary than a heartfelt story. The illustration at the beginning of each chapter was a nice touch. So, it added some creepiness to a rather clumsy storytelling. However, the ending surely made up for it, as it was done in an amusing and comical way. I think you would like the book for the adventure alone. The plot was interesting enough that I will be reading the next book in the series.

Thomas Ward is the seventh son of a seventh son. His life has a destiny. When Tom finds out that he is going to be an apprentice to a Spook he isn't happy at all. His Mam has been planning for him to do this since she married a seventh son. When Mr. Gregory comes to collect Tom, they set out to begin his training with the understanding that after a month if Tom has aptitude towards being a Spook and if Tom wants to continue then he will continue with his training. If not he will return home.
Tom isn't sure if he wants to become a Spook. Spooks live a lonely life because people don't like the work they do and are afraid of them. Tom's first challenge comes up when he goes to the village to pickup provisions for the week. A group of boys follow him up the hill wanting what is in his bag. They are hungry and Tom seems small. When Tom doesn't hand some food over, he finds himself with his back against the wall. When Alice appears and scares off the boys.
Alice is a young lady that lives with the neighboring witch. She gets Tom to promise his help to her for her saving him from the bullies.
This starts Tom problems that have vast consequences including ending Tom's life.

I found this book to be refreshing. It has aspects from stories like Boggarts, witches, ghasts, etc. However the story stands on it's own. It's not a vampire, ghoul sort of book. It's a quick read and the series is well developed.
