Not as gruesome as others had me believe. Although, a good bit of body horror to really get under your skin.
Some questionable containment procedures. A bit of good old fashioned racism and sexism. Would have liked to see more of the behind the scenes with the doctors.
Overall a good thriller, and I do intend to continue the series, just to see if things get more creepy.

I managed to start the sequel on the same day that I finished this one. If you don't like gore or blood, definately read with caution. A very interesting story. The fact that you "witness" different things happening at different places at either different or the same times, definately keeps you on your toes.
I never quite got around to finishing Scott Sigler's "Infected" trilogy, so before diving into "Pandemic" I thought I would reread the first two books in the series. In "Infected" a malevolent force is sprinkling Michigan with microscopic seeds that, if given the chance to take root in a human host metamorphose into a horrific new organism. "Scary" Perry Dawsey becomes such a host. The book bounces between his struggles with the "Triangles" and the efforts of a government task force to identify the strange threat that is causing seemingly random people to become homicidal maniacs. It's a really strong sci-fi novel with just enough gore to satisfy horror fans. What's more, having read much more of Sigler's work today than I had when this book first came out in 2008, there's a cameo at the end that glossed right past me the first time, but this time stopped me in my tracks.
Incredibly violent, utilitarian writing (not bad writing, just utilitarian), and some of the characters didn't quite read realistic, but wow what a great story. For the entire first half I was skeptical that it could live up to expectations or even deliver a good ending. For the second half I couldn't put it down.
3.5 stars I worried about starting this one. It's tough for a book with so much hype surrounding it to meet reader expectations, but it's doing that and more so far. Sigler's writing style is lean and mean. Several scenes rank among the grossest I've ever read, to the point where I'm laughing and cringing at the same time. Funny and scary, my favorite combination.
This book is 90% plot-driven. It moves from one action sequence to the next, and I usually tire of that type of story-telling pretty quickly. But not so with Sigler. What a ride. His powers of description are enormous. If Hollywood doesn't option this for a movie I'll be gob-smacked. So this book won't change your life or anything, but it's a fun, high-octane read, and there's nothing wrong with that.

This book is quite gruesome. I had never read/listened to any horror books before and it was... interesting. I had to take a few breaks from it because I just wasn't used to it. After the first couple mutilating scenes I was fine and did enjoy the book all in all. The only thing I had an issue with was considering how much blood was in the scenes, how did Perry not kick the bucket? I will probably continue the series, especially since the audio books are on podio :)
I really enjoyed reading this novel. It was a lot of fun to read, sort of like reading the equivalent of an action/thriller/horror movie.
An apt summation of the reading experience would be: mix Stephen King, Michael Chrichton and Tom Clancy.
I can't wait to delve into the sequel.

I have so many conflicting emotions about this, And many of them aren’t very good. The most prevalent is revulsion - the book went into a bit too much detail on a couple gory things that I wasn’t expecting, and didn’t really like. That said, I guess it did help sear that scene into my brain.
