This was not a good match for me. In general all the attempts at wit felt labored and long winded - even the chapter titles (which had the added frustration of spoiling the chapter). Somehow, even the scenes that were supposed to be steamy were masked in overly complex language that erased any chance of steam for me. I really wanted to love this book because the concept is so fun, but I just never could get onboard with the joke style.

I really liked this book at the beginning, but the humour and sarcasm became a bit tedious as the book went on. It reads like a bit of a comedic stage play, and I feel like a film adaption would be good, but reading it felt like a bit of a chore towards the middle.

I felt like everything was revealed too soon. I didn't read enough to know how Ned knew Cecelia's mother, but the cause of her death, among other things, was told to us too soon. I felt like there was nothing keeping me hooked on the plot, as everything we'd either already found out or could guess from the clues.

The characters were okay, but I just wasn't invested in what happens to them. Not the book for me, but maybe for someone else.

It was promoted as 'Peaky Blinders meets Bridgerton' yet it was not at all as I expected.

Instead of a gang of society ladies, they were all 'pirates' flying their cannon-filled houses around.

I just couldn't get into it or enjoy the story, I was not at all engaged or intrigued to know what happens. Reading it felt like an absolute chore (and a bit of a bore).

I tried reading both paperback and digital, but found myself looking for other books to read instead of this one.
