I'm not sure if it's just me, but middle books of a trilogy always seem to be the weakest of the novels. But in this case I don't think The Fall by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan falls into that trap. This middle novel in "The Strain" trilogy does move the novel forward. Several major characters die and the story takes a surprising turn. I'm looking forward to seeing how Mr. del Toro and Mr. Hogan write themselves out of the ending. I'm not sure humanity will win this fight in the end.

Darkly thrilling, utterly compelling: an excellent second book in this trio of horror novels in which vampires are rightfully something to be scared of. I await the third book, The Night Eternal, with much excitement. If this series concludes with the same energy of The Fall, it will be a very satisfying end to this groundbreaking story.

Oh, the clunky writing and illogical situations really ramped up in "The Fall". Let me say bad writing really turns me off from reading a novel. When a sentence slams me into a wall, it's not a cozy experience.

I welcome you to wrap your brain around this wretched nugget:

"As he did so, he felt the soft, clean scent of Miriam's hair. A scent that intoxicated him, and that, as a memory, greatly distracted him in the few hours they spent apart. Soon, their mutual intentions were made manifest and discretion gave way to apprehension as they hid in dark, dusty corners to find each other's breath and saliva."

Here's the best part; this is someone talking about the love of his life. I read this to my partner and she yelled "Yuck!" before laughing.

Nothing says true romance like finding each other's saliva in dark, dusty corners. Hope they brought a mop to clean up the mess and the extra "that's" cluttering the paragraph.

I know, I exaggerate. But this is the level of bad writing these two sneaky hooligans employ in order to race to their dramatic sequences. Major events like death and kidnapping take place in the series's second novel, but summoning up enough sympathy to care is a chore.

Stupid decisions are made, well duh, or else how would the novel rumble along? I know, I know, I've never been in a dire "vampires are attacking me" situation. But I would sure as hell not board a TRAIN to leave NYC. Trains travel through tunnels. Tunnels are dark. Vamps LIKE the dark.

Yeah, the illogical choices pile up like dead vamps. Like I said, the drop in quality and logic is nasty. On the bright side, this was a short, fast read.

Less pain earned it two stars instead of one star.

Well, since I picked up the third book in the trilogy from the library, I'll see what happens.

PS: I'm team Fet. Aren't we supposed to root for a character? *snicker*
