I'm not generally a big fan of novels with more than one strand to them, and I'm not sure this novel really convinced me massively. One story tends to be stronger than the other, and I certainly enjoyed the story of Edouard and Sophie more compelling than the modern day Liv and Paul.
It was, however, massively spoiled for me by the sloppy, incorrect German.
Yes, I understand that it was German from the point of view of a Frenchwoman, but the sentence structure was so cringingly English it felt like it had been lifted straight out of Google translate.
I'm afraid that initial annoyance probably coloured the rest of my opinion of it, which was entertaining enough, but ultimately too predictable for me.

I hated it to end.... I wanted to know more as I was completely engrossed in their stories. Reading about that time In history and how it could connect with modern time was fascinating.

Great story. Partly taking place in occupied France during WWI (it was nice to learn about this little known fact of the Great War as I usually read stories taking place during WWII).

The modern part of the story was also interesting.

Overall, it kept my interest and I enjoyed the book quite a bit.

*3,5

Edit: definitely just 4 stars

I’m debating between 4 and 5 stars. I enjoyed Liv’s part of the book more than Sophie’s, although I understand the necessary build up of seeing things from Sophie’s point of view. It was interesting to read a WWI historical fiction, rather than WWII. (I feel like I’ve read a lot of those lately.) I thought the conflict with Liv and the painting was interesting and intriguing. Sophie’s relationship with her husband and the Kommandant really made me debate what I would do if I were her. I think I’ll say 4.5 stars for me? This is my second Jojo Moyes book. I went in with high expectations since I loved Giver of Stars so much.

Well I was going to give this 4.5 stars but then the ending bumped it up to 5 stars for me. The premise is super interesting, I liked having the two stories and to see Liv become invested in Sophie's life like we were. It's also just an interesting dilemma to consider. The level of adult content is pretty low. My favorite Jojo Moyes book so far!

*random thing- this is my 3rd book of 2023 with a main character named Liv??
