Not my favorite Erdrich book but still pretty good. Basically a collection of short stories that relate to one another because of family lines. I would have liked more of a plot structure but Erdrich’s mystical and raw writing somewhat made up for it.

I loved this sort of family saga, focusing on two interlinked families (or step-families) born of the same man who loved two women. I found it rich, interesting, beautifully written and it has all the ingredients I love in everything else I have read by Louise Erdrich, although it took me a while to get my head around the many characters.

Such an incredible collection of character perspectives woven together in a span of many years. I loved the interconnectedness of the characters’ lives that the novel revealed, as well as the spirituality at its core. I will never forget parts of this story.
