The basic plot of the book is fantastic, and the drama that ensues raises some important points. Still, the stereotypes are definitely racist. While there are people defending the book here on GR, their reviews seem to hinge on "I loved this book as a kid" and downplay or attempt to explain away why the stereotypical elements are OK. Weirdly, I don't see any Native American reviewers excusing the casual racism, and that, with the gender stereotypes would keep me from recommending this one for kids. Too bad, because the premise is great.

This was my favorite book when I was younger. I even started a key collection because of this book!
I didn't know this was a book. I only ever watched the movie growing up. I really liked it, even though it was kind of a weird movie to me. It's a strange idea, but really enjoyable. I love the book even more. I read it all in one sitting and loved all of it. Patrick is a bit annoying, but every other character was great. It's a lot more nuanced than the movie is and was well written. I'd be interested to know if the other books that came after were any good. Maybe if I get the chance, I'll pick them up. I definitely recommend this. If you're worried about it being racist or something, don't. It's fantastic.
