I was a little lost when I first started the book, because there were a lot of words I couldn’t pronounce, but I quickly figured out what was going on and once I did I was hooked! All of the characters were amazing and I loved each of their journeys!!! I’ve never read the original swan lake, but I loved this retelling!

This was beautiful and atmospheric and the second half was really great. First half dragged a little though.

I had quite high expectations for this book, I’ve read few Swan Lake retellings and I’m always curious to see which details they choose to focus on.

I think the marketing of this book might have done it a disservice, because everything I have seen focused heavily on the sapphic romance aspect, and I went into this expecting more romance? There were some conversations and so teasing, but then the declarations of love happened and I felt like they had barely progressed past the anger for turning her into a swan, and the anger of the betrayal.

There were also a few details that just irked me. Like I’m sure they aren’t big in the grand scheme of things, but they just kept disrupting my enjoyment of the book. Why is the kings second wife referred to as Step-Queen? Is this a thing that I just don’t know about or did the author think we needed to be reminded that this Queen isn’t the Prince’s mother? I can’t think of any actual second Queen referred to like this. People also just came across as quite petty and fickle, like they would hear a few words from someone and that meant it had to be the truth.

I thought I knew that this was a standalone, and then in the last 20 pages we got the suggestion that this might go on further, because Odile has to confront the other goddesses, and then the epilogue just ignores all that and everything is solved? If there was that strict a word count, there were other (more repetitive scenes) that could have been removed instead of rushing the ending.
