Shelf talker at Powell’s on Hawthorne convinced me to read this. Great characters and unique narrator voice. Interesting world building and plot. Pacing is almost like real time and is realistic enough with the narrator’s thought processes that it can feel repetitive and frustrating. Cuz, you know, human thoughts are repetitive and frustrating. But it’s really good, so 3 stars maybe is just for the mass market print size? Also I accidentally got high as fuck on a gummy in Arch Cape, and this book and my introduction to Instagram Reels were the only things tethering me to reality

Dear readers, Sunshine is about baking, chocolate, defiance, and blood. The vampires are dangerous, evil, and terrifying. The main character, Sunshine, is a baker with a forgotten identity. She wants nothing to do with the world of Others (demons, vampires, and weres), she just wants to go on inventing delectable desserts with names like Death of Marat, and Killer Zebras. Instead she gets kidnapped by vampires.

Different from her other stuff. Bizarre. Not quite sure what exactly we're supposed to take away at the end and it doesn't feel finished but I enjoyed it nevertheless.

It's hard to say exactly what makes this book so wonderful. The totally-normal-but-somehow-incredibly-interesting heroine, the not-quite-romance, the questions and ideas thrown out but left unanswered and unexplained... this book is full of shadows and vivid images, and unusual characters. There's drama for people who like that, magic for those fans, and adventure for everyone else.
Basically, it's just awesome.

Wasn’t into it. Too much like True Blood.

Maybe 2.5 stars. Interesting enough premise, but sometimes the main character prattled on about how unbelievable her situation was and "Wow, he's STILL a vampire doing something NOT vampire like, but he's supposed to be a VAMPIRE!" etc etc. I was waiting for the main character to embrace a little bit of what was going on instead of constantly being surprised and then dismayed by her situation. That got quite tiresome after a while.

Also, in terms of format, I listened to the audiobook and something about how the narrator spoke was distracting.
