4,5* Dieser Teil war nicht ganz so gut wie der erste und trotzdem habe ich am Ende ein bisschen (doll!) geweint.

I mean. I don’t think I would’ve read it if not for the fact that I made a goal to read every book I own and haven’t read in 2022. And I own 1-4 of this series. Here’s hoping book 3 is better.

I did enjoy the historical details. They were interesting but they also really bogged down the storyline imo. Though to be fair, I think that’s kind of the point.

This book was a bit of a miss for me. It lacked the charm and novelty of the first Outlander book, and I was so tired by the end, it was not an enjoyable reading experience. At times, I found it repetitive, the characters were annoying (especially our protagonist Claire, I could not stand her at times), and the same issues of tons of unnecessary sexual harassment are there. <s>(fun bonus!: cheating.)</s>

I found it a bit hard to connect with the characters this time. The story tries to make us look at historical characters as if they were real people, with their own motivations, to stop thinking of them as figures from the past we only read from in books. Buuuuuuut it also has this "will we save them and change history?" aspect that makes their doom and ending from history books and records seem inevitable.

Claire cannot change anything, she cannot change fate. In fact, she is probably the reason things happened the way they did. So now I'm just stuck with stupid historical characters that don't seem human to me, they are just NPCs. This situation happened so often that instead of being representative of this book's core theme, it was just repetitive and frustrating.

The only salvageable aspect of this series is Jamie Fraser, Claire's husband. I love him so much, I just want to protect him and save him from his doom. He does have some red flags, I'd say. Sometimes he is too "macho" for me, a bit misogynistic, but he always means well, I suppose. I would not have forgiven him for the beating in the first book, but if Claire forgave him, I guess I do too.

I think I will get a break from this series. I can't believe I'm at book 2, I feel like I've read five of these already. I'll return to this series later when I've got more patience for our characters. (Also when I have patience to deal with Brianna, I can tell she's gonna bother me a lot.)

Edit: I will not be continuing this series because I read another review that turn me off so much. If the best part about the book (the romance between Jamie and Claire) is ruined, I don't have any reason to keep it going. Such a letdown.

The story was really interesting and captivating. The only thing which was a bit confusing was the political games in France. And some 'magical' scenes which kinda weren't really fitting in there.
I really like the scenes of the two times (1746 and 1968) which mixed perfectly well eventually, very well thought through to bring all the sense and excitement of the events.

Okay I didn't really like the first Outlander book, but tbh I was into this one and totally enjoyed it. That's really all I have to say - pleasant surprise after the unexpected disappointment of the first novel.

I liked some things about this better than the first book. The characters maybe seemed a little richer or perhaps because the TV series didn't follow this one quite so closely, so there were more surprises. I thought I was going to find the switches to Roger's point of view tedious, but I didn't (though I do think we could have done as well or better without them). And I really think this could have and should have been divided into two books. There was so much moving around. France seemed drawn out and a story unto itself, and then the military campaign seemed rushed and crammed into the last quarter of the book.
But I still enjoyed it and have already started in on the next book. I'll also say that although the TV series has done a great job with casting, I think Jamie is a more interesting character on the page. Several times you get the feeling that he's off doing really interesting and clever things that we just don't have time to get into, and that he'd make a good book even without Claire. In the TV show, there are moments when he seems like he's just there tondo her bidding, and I like that in the book Claire can be a very strong character, doing her own thing, without it meaning that Jamie is limited to being her lapdog and a nice set of muscles when physical strength is called for.

I have loved both of the books I have read so far! It’s well written and there’s just the perfect amount of drama and romance! I cannot wait to read the rest of he books! It took longer than I would have liked to read the book just because of how busy I got but not for lack of wanting to! I would definitely recommend this book!!
