Really solid PI procedural. Very procedural, to the extent that you know the shape of the mystery early on and the later plot points are basically just nailing down details. But it’s well written and with good enough characters that I didn’t mind.

This is the second Alice Vega novel and I was really looking forward to it because I absolutely loved Two Girls Down. I didn't have the same feeling about The Janes, and I am disappointed. I just couldn't get into this one, possibly because it seemed so complicated, and far-fetched. I love that Alice is very intuitive and can sense what is happening, but some of the storyline/plot development just didn't ring true for me.
This is the story of 2 girls "The Janes" who are found dead with some distinctive marking. Alice and Cap are brought in as consultants by the San Diego Police Dept and the DEA to try and solve the murders. Alice and Cap discover a bit of troublesome dealings within these organizations, and are also blindsided by what is happening to girls who are smuggled into the US and sex trafficked.
While the issues are real, I just didn't believe the storyline.
I hope the next Alice Vega story holds my interest more.
Thanks to Edelweiss.plus and Doubleday for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

In many ways Alice Vega fits a type. She's a noble, honorable, lawbreaking, iconoclastic PI. But, as a woman freed from the constraints of relationships (with the exception of Max Caplan), family and home, she is a steadfast defender of what's right. As portrayed by Louisa Luna, Vega has an obsessive relationship with helping the helpless, and liberating the exploited. She, of course, is canny, brilliant, strong and impulsive, and she can't stay out of trouble. Another really good read from Luna.

Louisa Luna has a special talent about her that makes the reader want to read until the book is finished. She also writes some of the most heartbreaking scenes that provoke emotion, which I LOVE! I love the neutral pinning between Alice and Max, and I love how they work together. The twist in this book was absolutely unseen to me, and I was SHOCKED TO SAY THE LEAST! I loved this book and lovers of true crime with a hint of romance will top!

I absolutely loved Two Girls Down, so when I heard there was another book coming out, I knew I wanted to read it.  Lucky for me I won The Janes through a Bookish First Giveaway!

Let me tell you that if you liked Two Girls Down, you will not be disappointed with Alice Vega #2.  You could read this as a standalone, but then you won't be familiar with Vega and Cap.  Together they make one dynamic duo.  Cap is no longer surprised by Vegas crazy antics, and they seem to read each others thoughts.  That's one thing I love about Vega, her crazy, but humorous to me, antics.

This did read a lot slower than Two Girls Down, but I was ok with that.  It is more detailed, and there are a lot more people to keep track of.  The investigation to find out what happened to the Janes is a little drawn out, so that may bore some readers.  I was sucked in the entire time, and I did not lose interest.  However, with there being so many people involved in the investigation, I did need to read some parts twice.

With that said, I thought everything tied up into a nice bow.  It was interesting to me how everyone was connected.  That ending! It's one ending I will never forget.  I thought it was genius, and very typical Alice Vega antics.  Justice doesn't get anymore sweet than that.

Thank you @bookishfirst and @doubledaybooks for my ARC.

Loved this. I love Alice Vega and Cap and I already want more. Alice is kind of like Sherlock in Elementary - I'm not sure any human being could really be that intuitive but I'm willing to suspend my disbelief. Parts of it were hard to read, and of course it's difficult to think about all the people out there in this very situation.
