This one’s getting a lot of attention so I was looking forward to reading it.
And— it was so very sad from the beginning that I felt like it was dragging me down, down down into doom and hopelessness.
A young girl is eating a meal with her family when they first see the news report : an asteroid is heading to earth and will make impact in four days. As a science/math whiz who loves probabilities, Kemi immediately starts calculating the chances of survival and realizes that there is really no hope.
Her pregnant mom is feeling too sick and sad to leave her bed and her father is starting to look sick himself with every passing hour….
Oof. I struggled with this one and when I got to the twist— because there is a big one— I was even more sad. Also, I hate to say it, but I just feel like the majority of kids will not understand it.
I feel bad not gushing about this one because it’s a book that is all too realistic both before and after the twist…
But oof. Too sad and gloomy from every possible angle for me to recommend to my readers.
(I’m sorry! Don’t hate me!)
If you’ve also read this, please tell me your thoughts !

I liked this book but it also confused me. The narrative opens with the discovery of impending doom aka the three day away collision of an asteroid knocked off its course. Kemi, the main character, spends most of these days trying to come to grips with what this impending doom will mean and also creating a time capsule of people's favorite things for future Earthlings to remember them by. For most of the book however, I could not square what was happening with Kemi's actions. When the final reveal came, it sort of made sense but Kemi kept going with the original plot line until nearly the end which confused me and affected my reading experience. This had a lot of promise but unfortunately it did not deliver.

Wow! I now know why people say not to read anything about this book, but to go into it “blind.” This book is a must-read.

I am currently ugly crying. Like I am devastated. I am moved and sad and angry. The only thing that was confusing was the meteor connection, but I got a lesson in grief that I won’t be forgetting anytime soon.
