audiobook while walking. Had to listen at 1.35 speed as Mr. Tucci speaks relatively slowly. Enjoyed it for the most part and may even want to have a hard copy for a few of the recipes. Mr. Tucci was humorous and seemed friendly. I did find it a bit annoying when there was any dialogue recounted. The issue was that for every sentence that someone spoke they were identified prior to the sentence. This type of identification may be a way that a script is written but when it is read aloud it can be tedious. I found this especially so when Mr. Tucci was recounting a conversation with his 5yo son. so many of the answers by the 5 yo were one word, so that all I seemed to be hearing was: me, Matteo, me, Matteo, me, Matteo, me Matteo................arrggghhhh. I do think that I will find and watch his series Searching for Italy.

I would definitely suggest reading the physical book rather than listening to the audio version, as much as I love listening to him narrate. There are a ton of recipes (and some dialogue that is written out more as a screenplay), so it didn't really lend well to listening. That being said, Tucci's memoir is funny and charming, and I recommend it if you love him (and food!)

I thoroughly enjoyed watching Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy on CNN and figured this would be just as entertaining...I wasn't wrong. I listened to the audio, read by the author but it would be valuable to have the book as well if only for the recipes! He provides recipes for some of his favourite food items and a martini, his preferred beverage of choice. I'd say this book is not for the faint of heart because preparations of some meat (homegrown livestock) is just a bit gross even for the biggest carnivore. My only complaint is some bits are monotonous such as dialogue where he points out who is speaking ie. me...blah blah blah, my mother...blah blah blah. It goes on a bit long, probably more monotonous because it was audio and might work better if it's read, that's the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. When you get the opportunity look up "timballo/timpano/timbale" all versions of a VERY labour intensive dish.
A very enjoyable read/listen, especially if you like food.

So glad I chose to listen to this as an audiobook read by Stanley Tucci himself. The vivid portrayal of his life through food spoken in his own voice are much better captured. I was unaware that there would be actual recipes in it, so I will need to grab a copy for those specifically as they sound amazing.

He also makes me crave family recipes and cooking with my grandmother in this wonderful passage... "Losing a beloved family heirloom is a very real personal loss; they're things that cannot ever be replaced or re-created. But perhaps the most precious heirlooms are family recipes. Like a physical heirloom, they remind us from whom and where we came and give others, in a bite, the story of another people from another place and another time. Yet unlike a lost physical heirloom, recipes are a part of our history that can be re-created over and over again."

I have both the paperback edition and audio version, if like me, you adore Stanley Tucci, I recommend the audiobook, as he reads it himself.  Delivered with the Tucci Spice attitude as only he can, has made it one of my favorite audiobooks.
