Like all anthologies, some stories are better than others. But, this was a pretty solid collection overall.

Wide variety of types of stories and quality. Ultimately I think the only ones I'll probably remember are N K Jemisin, Tananarive Due, Maria Dahvana Headley, Amel El-Mohtar, and James Tip tree Jr's stories.

I picked this up because of John Joseph Adams talking about it on the Geeks Guide to the Galaxy podcast.

I've read many times many science fiction anthologies. Until now, I've rarely enjoyed the stories. Every single story in this collection is mind-blowingly amazing! I absolutely love the fact that not only are there science fiction stories, but also short interviews on the authors. In addition, the essays at the end are on point. I can relate to so many of them, being a super nerdy kid in the 90's.

And if you didn't already figure it out- this collection is written, edited, and illustrated exclusively by women.

Is it appropriate for me to type in caps? I'm going to anyway. THIS COLLECTION IS AMAZING!!!! Go read it. :)

Note 2023: This was probably about "Each to Each" by Seanan McGuire, but it's been 7+ years, who knows? Fucking goodreads.

Meh. Some good ideas, but the backstory/plot ratio was way off and it wound up explainy and preachy. I was never remotely uncertain what the protagonist was going to decide to do.

Heard on the Lightspeed podcast.

Seanan McGuire is a master of world-building as demonstrated in this short but incredibly engaging story. Set in a future where the navy is made up entirely of genetically modified women made to be more like mermaids, no part of it seems out of place or farfetched, and the reader can very easily place oneself into this world. The character of the narrator has a strong, clear, and unique voice and everything just flows well. I hesitate to delve too much more into the details at the risk of spoiling too much (always a much higher risk when dealing with shorter fiction). I definitely recommend this - the only drawback I found is that I got so immersed in this world and this story, I want more...
