How could anyone not love this book? And why are all of the in-print editions abridged? It's tragic. Going to have to scour ebay and Amazon and find a suitable copy to add to my library.

If you are disappointed in the Disney adaptation, give the Russian film Bambi's Childhood (Detstvo Bembi/Bambi) a try. It's a weird English-subtitled 80's live action film that uses both humans and animal footage, but if you can get over the trippy weirdness it follows the book better. I discovered this gem in my library catalog.

What a beautiful sad story. This book is about death and the circle of life.

I liked this book a lot. It made me think and re-consider the world.
At the same time, I hated it. It made me think about how awful and brutal and violent and deadly the world is and how pain and suffering are commonplace, even if "only" in the case of a fox killing a rabbit.

Written in 1923 this is what Walt Disney film with the same name was based on, and I was happy I've seen the movie before reading this and was prepared for a rather sad story. But the book is much more darker then I thought but still beautiful and visual at the same time. It had a weird affect on my brain, where I pictured this as something very beautiful with all the animals and was at times very heartwarming. But there is also a very dark and sad parts to this. Death is not uncommon for the story. Would love to read more by Felix Salten and might do it rather sooner than later.
