Because of the pandemic , I chose to homeschool. Because I chose to homeschool, we do a lot of reading. this is a pick for our family read-aloud and oh my goodness. This captured the hearts of a 36 year old woman whom has never read this book before , to the hearts of my 10th grade, 7th grade, 3rd grade, and 1st grade kiddo's.
It has a darker theme, but done in such a whimsical way that it lightens it some how. After we finished the book we celebrated by watching the Disney movie and pick up little hints of the book inside of it. This will be a treasure for sure. It is also THE book that has convinced my kids that books are better than the movie - (a rule I've been trying to convince them of forever.)
This is a treasure that I will keep for sure.

Perhaps the best compliment that I can give to this book is that I read it in less than 24 hours. Though I love reading, not many books make me commit such a feat. Bambi was one of those glorious few.

If you are preparing to read a book that is the mirror image of the Disney movie, this is not that, but in my opinion, it is so much better on every level. Bambi is a difficult story to read for empaths; if I hadn't been vegan already, I think this book had the potential to make me choose such a lifestyle. It is a beautiful and gut-wrenching and earnest and brutal, and that's what makes it five stars.

Throughout the entire novel, the animals in the forest tugged at my heart strings. The way in which Felix writes their interactions felt honest, unstilted, and not overly sentimental, but it provided plenty of insight into the fear and the treacheries of the forest. I think the way he wrote about the hunter as being this unknown He/Him really set the stage for this line of tension throughout, perfectly contrasted against his lovely descriptions of nature.

People are saying in the other reviews that they wouldn't read this to their children, and while I wouldn't to a young child, I feel like people of all ages would enjoy this book and that we shouldn't unduly shelter our kids from the realities of life. This isn't a terrifying book, but it is a realistic telling of what many animals lives are like, and by exposing children to that at an appropriate age will make them more empathetic human beings.

A perfect ten for this book. Best one I've read so far this year.

This is not a children's book. My goodness. There's a lot of death, much of it very graphic. Just a very dark book in general. I don't know how exactly to explain it, but yeah, it's definitely not a feel-good children's story. I'm mildly traumatized by parts of it... but at the same time, it's beautifully written and has some very calming descriptions of nature. I think I might have to read it again. After I've had some time to recover.

This is a true coming of age story. Salten truly captures the beauty of life, and death, in his writing. Probably the most striking scene was between the two oak leaves as they pondered life and death as winter approaches.

I cried too many times because of it when I was a kid.
