Of the 30 movies that were the focus of this book, I had seen about half, a good portion of those I saw when they came out in 1999. This was a nostalgia trip for me, so much happened that year.
In the late 1990s and very early 2000s, I remember it seemed that there were an usually large number of very unique films coming out, but I didn't realize until this book just how many groundbreaking movies were released in one year: 1999.

But the author goes further to show some of the common threads and conditions that lead to the creation of such interesting and unique films.

Very friendly to people who are not particularly movie buffs but have seen most of the movies over the years. I kept passing along factoids to my husband, who likes movies more than I do but books less.
the title is right. 1999 was a great year for film. one of my favorite films ever (wasn't mentioned in the book) came out in 1999, CENTER STAGE.
