The Outlander series is simply AMAZING. I have read the entire series through multiple times. Reading the book description, it wouldn't normally be something I chose, but im so glad I did! Now I am a FOREVER FAN. If you love to read, you need to give the series a chance...you will fall in love with the Fraser Clan!!!!

I don't even know where to begin with this. The racism is through the roof, and I kept thinking it was going to get better, that our modern woman would do or say something, but it just kept getting worse. The one Asian character is so dehumanised, stripped of his name and is essentially an ugly stereotype. Also, why does nobody care that 30 year old Fergus marries a 15 year old? No thank you. None of the good part of the narrative is even close to enough to make me overlook all of this.

Another successful epic in one of my favorite series. A few themes that were (thankfully) left out of the television adaptation. There is an antisemitic trope that Gabaldon included which easily could have been omitted. Had she or an editor researched the provenance or even the discourse surrounding such tropes, it probably wouldn't have been included. I can't say much more without spoilers.

There are themes surrounding the slave trade, although historically accurate, were unreasonably graphic as compared to other sensitive topics. Combined with the repeated use of white-savior heroism, these depictions were invasive and heavy-handed.

Nonetheless, the writing is phenomenal. There is something for everyone--romance, adventure, drama, and humor. The plot is captivating, the characters are complex, and the imagery is rich and creative.
