This book does not deserve my energy in writing a review but here are some thoughts I had while reading:
  • The racist stereotypes
  • The rape
  • Even when they’re technically consenting, the age gaps in relationships. They are not okay
  • The fatphobia
  • I don’t want to have to reread the book to find evidence but I feel like Jamie definitely lied to Claire about not having remarried or had children. And after Laogharie? he definitely should have brought up his son.
  • Gabaldon just needs an editor.

The stereotypical characters and voices in this one killed me a little but I still enjoyed the overall experience.

This one was tough for me to get through. Some parts I liked, but there were too many things that left a bitter taste in my mouth. The racism was bad.
Every mention of Yi Tien Cho using the C slur? Yikes. Frank saying some racist stuff? Oof. The treatment of the enslaved people? Horrifying. But, I was surprised at the part at the sale of enslaved people when Claire freaked out but acknowledged that she wasn’t doing it for any of the people being sold, but for herself. It’s a startlingly modern moment, but an important one I think, cause Claire isn’t really an ally like they tried to make her in the show, and this thought really reflects that. Anyways.
Jamie, to my horror,
sexually assaulted Geneva (and yes it was assault because she told him to stop and he didn’t. Her blackmailing him is bad, yes, but two wrongs don’t make a right),
and I was incredibly angry and am still not over it. And the fatphobia in this book became honestly unbearable. Among other things,
telling your daughter not to get fat in your farewell letter to her before you go back into the past forever?
Good god. So, safe to say this is my least favorite of the books by a mile.

First book above 1,000 pages-what a ride. Although Jamie and Claire's reunion was touching, it wasn't as strong as the first two books. Plot-wise, a lot of scenes felt too drawn out whereas the eventual climax really needed more fleshening out. I also didn't admire Claire's character as much as I previously did, and I kept wondering if Gabaldon was explicitly trying to make her unlikeable. Her fatphobia and the misogyny connected to that was painful. Even more so did the blatant racism and white saviour complex throughout the novel take a lot away from the escapism to entirely consider it as enjoyable. "Different times" is fine and all, but a romance should know its limits. Criticisms aside, I loved a lot of the characters and the story was intruiging as always and I'm excited to see where else the story takes Claire and Jamie (I say, as if I haven't already watched the TV adaptation).

Bloody hell
i forgot that Jamie rapes a teenager in this book. And it’s written like he did her a favour and couldn’t help himself??? Awful.

The fatphobia 😩 (p. 253, 262, 268, 670)

The fatphobia on page 670 in particular has stayed with me since I first read this as a teenager. The concept that the best advice a mother could ever give her daughter is “don’t get fat” is so completely horrendous. Bad mothering. Bad writing.

Rape myth/ victim blaming p. 256

Terrible racism on p. 268 that’s written as if Claire is meant to look better in comparison, even though she doesn’t actually call it out???

Chapter 20 reeks of a white person writing a black character and has even more fatphobia!

I just got up to Mr Willoughby and now remember why last time I read this series I swore I’d never read them again. This is so overtly racist it is incredibly difficult to read. The character is a stereotyped caricature who is treated like a pet by Jamie.

Chapter 35 is something else. Is Claire suddenly 13? Why the fuck would she run back to the stones, after acknowledging that another trip through would kill her, without having a proper conversation with Jamie? I mean one where they don’t just aggressively fuck.

WHY is a 30 year old man marrying a 15 year old and everyone is chill about it? Oh wait sorry no, they have problem with his birth and career, but the age diff is fiiiiine. “It was a different time” - okay but this was written in the 1990s sooooo

Chapter 53 is awful and rough and so unnecessary. Huge TW for enslavement, racism, sexual assault, violence, death.
