A truly beautiful coming of age graphic novel. I've seen this one around for years and finally decided to pick it up. It certainly didn't have to go as hard as it did. However, that is what makes it amazing. It is simple and understated while delivering the honest realities we don't realize impact us until much later in life. Rose's summer is filled with uncertainty, friendship, growth and deciding who she wants to be. The decisions of others, seemingly for the first time, affect how she views the world. I enjoyed this immensely. It reminds of the growing up summer experience. If only I had read it at a cottage, that would have been the perfect reading ambiance.

I did not expect what I got in this book based on the awards printed on the front. At various points in the narrative I found myself really engaged and a little hopeful. At other points the narrative felt uncomfortable and made me wonder why the author included those scenes. Unfortunately, I did not end up enjoying this book that had potential and will not add it to my classroom shelves.
A mysterious graphic novel that slowly uncovers a devastating story and just as sad subplots? Yes, please!
