Great art. So so plot threads.

3.5 rounding up to 4. pleasant enuf

I have mixed feelings - like some parts were good, some bad. And it didn't have any particular storyline so I'm not sure how to feel about it over-all.

I was really pleasantly surprised because the cover does not do justice to how exquisite and detailed the illustrations in this book are! Also even though I didn't have the same childhood vacation experience, it still really tapped into summertime nostalgia for me.

I thought the story was also very delicate and complex. Addressing themes of loss, grief, and neglect when a parent falls into a depression and can't get out. I related to Rose too because my parents also didn't get along, especially clear on things like vacations where you are forced out of your normal routine and into a lot of space and time spent together.

My favorite theme explored though was the depiction of how young girls can learn and internalize patriarchy and how that starts to come out in things like assumptions of other girls and "loyalty" to boys.

Will reread!

This book had beautiful artwork and a good story about loss, grief, and growing up.
