I am not the biggest fan of graphic novels, but I am reading a list of banned books and this one consistently comes up on the recent lists.  It is a Caldecott listed book and so very well reviewed by critics and the publishing industry.  It has some difficult subject matter but overall a unique story.

Let me stay like this, I've just finished this graphic novel and it left me pleasant feeling, a calmness and satisfaction.

One family coming in a vacation with a burden, two girls trying their best two enjoy the summer while facing questions of growing up and absorbing the environment.

What really captivated me was the paneling, the way that the story it's told, how masterfully minor sound are incorporated in the pictures and suddenly you are there, you can really feel and sense the panel.

It is also rare two find comics of novels with such good dialogues, constantly in character and minding the agree. Really well written characters.

If you want to enjoy a story of a summer vacation and coming to age, without big plotting and twists, just enjoy, this is for you.

Reread three years later and, I must say, I understood it a lot better this time and have grown to appreciate it a lot more. It is so cool to watch these two girls start off on the same page, absorbing information from around them, but then fall apart when they are at different stages of growth and critical thinking. I loved the nuances with Jenny and the parallels with the mom, and I found myself having to check myself, much like Rose learned to do. It was a beautiful read and I loved how subtle everything was. Nothing was too forward, which allowed for more introspection and a much deeper appreciation of the book. Loved it.

This made me reminiscent for the years we spent at the cottage when I was younger. We experienced our own heartaches and traumas that weren't the same as the characters in this but still mirrored the uncomfortable emotions/thoughts in some ways. I really enjoyed this.

This Summer made me dislike a child.  Rose is going through some stuff, but dang, so annoying with her misplaced anger and judgements.  I liked Windy a lot; she was always eating and looked very young, and was fun all the time.  The book tacked serious topics such as friendship, family dynamics, toxic masculinity, and suicide.  The illustrations were so realistic and emotional. Really gave me summer vibes.  Black and white imaging was a great way to show case this story.  Good job.
