Solid, not my favourite but still a really good coming of age type story with a good vibe and a good message

Helt okej bok, inget revolutionerande. Basically helt okej men inget revolutionerande.

"Awago Beach is this place where my family goes every summer. Ever since like... forever."

Overall, I'd have to give This One Summer... 2 stars.

Mariko Tamaki is stellar in capturing reality within words, and her cousin Jillian Tamaki is equally talented through her art. Skim was absolutely wonderful, I enjoyed everything about it. I found it placid yet riveting. I felt like I was reading a real girl's diary.

I was a bit disappointed in This One Summer. There was little plot, and if I had to describe it one word, it would be 'mundane.' There was not much delivered here, and I wanted so much more.

Rose is a young girl who goes with her family to stay at Awago Beach, where her family spends their summers annually. However, this trip is different than last time because her parents are constantly fighting. With little recognition from her mother, Rose finds solace by hanging out with her friend Windy.

I understand that since Rose is trying to and (is encouraged to) get away from the family drama and since this is vacation, that she'll likely spend a majority of her time with Windy. However, I felt as though the story was too invested in their mundane activities and capturing the likeness of tweens.

The characterization was very subtle and very minimal as well, to the point where it had some readers muddled with confusion. While interpreted as problematic, and implemented so subtly, Rose's arc had her abandon her problematic ideology. However since it was so indistinct, it was pretty hard to understand whether or not the story celebrated or called out on certain themes. The way I see it, Mariko Tamaki was not urging us to bash on others, but to capture how people change in the sneakiest of ways.

The writing was very well done, however. I could see myself in Rose's shoes, remembering summers of days gone-by. They actually spoke like children, neither too "adult"-sounding nor too immature (though immaturity was sprinkled in some places as they joked about Rose's crush and other things). Mariko Tamaki perfectly snaps a picture of childhood and mounts it up on a wall as we relate to Rose and Windy.

This One Summer was mundane, yes, but for the love of all things good, please don't give up on the Tamaki cousins! They are extremely talented, and if this wasn't your cup of tea, I would definitely recommend Skim: beautiful artwork and story.

this quietly captures the authentic complexities of girlhood with remarkable subtlety. how girls actually think, speak, and navigate the confusing transition between childhood and adolescence. the complicated self-loathing that often comes along with growing up. the challenges of womanhood at all ages.

Pretty good - 3.5
