This book has so much research built into the story that it makes you really appreciate the author. I really enjoyed it.

Like Harry Potter but the bad guys and the colonized world are very real. Loved the magical feel and deep dive into language. Loved the friendship the four main characters got to build at a magical school. Loved robin’s arc. So well done. Insane how many societal issues in the 1830s still ring true today. Knocking half a Star off because at times it felt too long and tedious (sooo many footnotes?) and I wanted just a little more from the ending. Just a little glimpse of violette a few years in the future.

4.25 - it was good, I always enjoy her works, and it did a good job of not dumbing down for the reader while also adding enough context and footnotes to help understand references. I just always enjoy how real the characters are and hoe everyone has flaws; there's no "this is the MC and they're perfect all the time"

Not a full 5 from me just because I was able to put it down regularly which is why it took so long to finish.

I enjoyed this book and the story of Robin's life and now that I've finished, feel many big feelings. I was torn about whether to rate this medium or slow paced, because the pacing wasn't consistent, so if you prefer faster paced books, keep this in mind. The author is an incredibly detailed writer, which added to the depth of the story, but again, if you skim, keep this in mind.
