Gemmell was and still is one of my favourite authors. His books and characters have always been incredible.

This one is packed with action and a very much larger then life character.

If you are a fan of swords and sorcery you should read every Gemmell book out there.

As much as this is book one of the Drenai Saga it is the end for Druss not the beginning.
You might enjoy this one more if you read the other Druss books first - this book does refer back to them but it will do just fine standing on its own.

An exceptionally well-told story. I loved how the author just skipped over parts where it was obvious what was going to happen, but that almost all other authors would have included.

It's just to bad that the story was among themost uninteresting one can find: war, without much else.

I'd probably give this 4* on a different day but there were certain aspects of the writing that I didn't enjoy; I guess I'm too used to more modern books. The ending felt a bit forced but understanding how it was written this makes sense. I can see why it was so influential in its time.

Every bit as good as the first time I read it. A most enjoyable read
