This started out pretty straightforward and then slowly veered off into crazy plot twists and....I don't even know what. The end was so unbelievable. I mean maybe spies don't intimidate like they used to, or the threat of them seems unreal, but this was bananas.

Plus I hated Iris by the end.

Ha but I did read the whole thing! Sometimes hate reads are the best reads.

The body of Danielle, who runs an adoption agency, is found in a perfect Austin suburb and sends shockwaves through the community.  Her death is particularly hard on the Pollitt family who adopted their son from Russia through her agency.  Grant, this son, receives anonymous emails suggesting his whole life has been a lie; the parents are suspicious of each other; the daughter will stop at nothing to  keep her family together.

This was a real page-turner that I read practically in one sitting, though I'll be honest the ending was bordering on farcical and felt a little lazy.

For all that, taut, engaging writing has the reader wondering what they would do for family and love.  An author to look out for

There was too much going on! Too many character chapters plus the interludes of Iris's adoption journal and news articles. Throw in the adoption hassles, the continual inferences to secrets and nefarious deeds, the use of a video game to sell drugs plus the murder that started the book. I wasn't able to make it through. If the audio has a full cast, then I will try again and update my review.

Pure escapism. This would make a great movie - adoption, Russians, prescription drug dealing, set in a ritzy suburb of Austin, Texas. What's not to love?

So convoluted and unbelievable, I was struggling to care the last 50 pages… the big reveal was rather boring. Kept me reading so 2 stars.
