I wanted to give it 5. But as the book ended it got a little confusing. It stayed interesting for me but was a little too twisty for it to make sense in the moment. Past that the book portrays a wonderful reason why you don’t marry someone within days of meeting
Quit at 40%. Audiobook narrator was amazing, but I prefer my gothics to be more mysterious about if it's magic/demons/devils/whatever and this was too explicitly magic.
good start, fucking slog of an end. character traits and motivations felt ham-fisted and flat. was begging to be put out of my misery by the end.

I liked much about this novel-- the creepy, gothic, psychological, unraveling-ness are all some of my favorite elements within a novel. Unfortunately a good portion of the book felt like it was going in circle regarding the ritual Jane subjects herself to. The magic and mathematics felt weak and lacking connection to the storyline. Like the magical aspect is one of the biggest details of the whole plot, but it was poorly explained and I wish it weren't. All the pieces are there for a kickass, unique story, but it didn't wow me by any means. The setting and gothic details were amazing, like, I'm just a sucker for it.

Definitely an effective gothic horror (light on the horror as gothics tend to be), very reminiscent of Rebecca with an infusion of the occult. It did feel a bit far reaching out convoluted at times.

I feel as if the book consumed me instead of the proper way around. It slurped my brain up, chewed vigorously, and spat it out all awhirl. All I know for sure is that I loved Augustine and his house of tragedies.
