Eerie, haunting, at parts hard to get through (madness and gore), lots of logical jumps, but an enjoyable and gripping read.

I understand the controversy surrounding this book, but WOW I loved it.
The first half leads the reader to expect a Gothic romance. The second half is true horror. Many reviews seem to express frustration with the change, which makes sense to me; the author didn’t clearly signal what was to come, and if I was looking for a Gothic romance, I would feel betrayed by this book. “My surprisingly handsome new husband owns a creepy mansion” doesn’t necessarily lead to the body horror and overall insanity which unfolds in the second half of Jane Lawrence.
But…I, personally, was looking for a true horror novel, and WOW I got it. By “gory,” I mean I genuinely almost vomited. The creepy setting, the building dread that eventually heightens into terror, the interweaving of supernatural and psychological elements….I’m blown away by what I just read.
Undoubtedly, this book suffers from major structural issues. Essentially switching genres halfway through the book is not something I’m eager to encounter again in another book. But for fans of real horror who can choose to overlook such problems for the sake of an absolutely bats**t crazy mind-blowing ride, this book is worth the read.

i did not get the ending AT ALL. but after looking up an explanation, i actually think it's really cool. but, unfortunately, i am dumb, so i did not like the experience of reading the ending. but 10/10 vibes!
