this was confusing to read, it felt like 2 different stories. which made utter sense once I read the author's note at the end about how this had been a completely different story until she chopped it up to change the main character's motivations. The main character was very difficult to get a read on, she felt like 2 different people at times, and that instability made for a confusing story. rly bummed i picked this up from the bookstore, I'm honestly probably going to return it.
i'd have liked to read the original version, where the MC isn't a strong, independent woman but instead a flawed individual who goes back/forgives/etc her love interest time and time again. what makes Rebecca, one of the best gothic horrors, great is that the narrator is so naive/young/flawed and returns/forgives Maxim again and again despite his abuse. you watch her slowly build up her own sense of self while understanding completely why Rebecca is such a haunting ghost to her, psychologically, while she is trapped inside of her own insecurities.
the depiction of "magic" maddened me, too. you can only do magic if you fully believe it exists and to do that in a world where science exists, you have to be mentally ill / insane. i thought we were over the mentally ill = special abilities trope cuz it unrealistically romanticizes suffering.

Not sure what to think of this, because I couldn't quite sort out the concepts while I was reading. it's hard to deal with near parallel worlds as well, this is very close to post WWI England, i'm thinking? But the world just misses and leaves you unsure of what is beyond the house and the surgery
This will be my new example of morally grey characters.
