For a first time modern horror read, this was definitely a good pick.

Readers TW: blood, in-depth details of surgery, light body horror.

My experiences with the genre had only been in old classics, like Dracula and some hp love craft.

The death of Jane Lawrence filled a nice little desire I had for weird and a little bit disturbing but also cozy in an uncomfortable sort of way.

There were definitely some elements I wish could have been maybe a little scarier, but in all it was a nice read and perfect for what I wanted at the time.

Oh yeah baby. This is gothic horror through and through. Slow, atmospheric dread and a house that is alive and hates you. Also I loved that Jane was autistic and written that way on purpose, probably the best-written autistic character I have ever seen.

And it makes use of my favourite gothic trope
with time being a loop and future/past haunting the present
in a way I saw coming but still found supremely satisfying. Yay!

this book has the makings of a good gothic horror, but the pacing and atmosphere just wasn’t enough for me! the initial build up to the gothic, ghostly conflict was good. i liked the mix of medicine and the supernatural. but then everything went a little off the rails (in a bad way). around the 75% mark, it got so tedious and i skimmed the rest.

not for me! i might try some of the author’s other works?

Very unique! I love the gothic feel and the plot was super interesting. Absolutely perfect for fall! Some of it was really complicated and hard to follow so it's probably more like a 3.5. I listened to the audiobook but I would go back and read the physical book. I'm excited to read more from the author.

idk why i decided to go back to this author when the previous 2 books i read were so disappointing to me. enough
